Overview

Develop a diagnostic tool that allows Cookient customers to verify their Google Consent Mode implementation status, identify configuration issues, and troubleshoot problems. The tool should proactively help customers ensure their setup is working correctly.

Background

As of 2025, Google requires all Gold tier CMP Partner Program participants to provide a user-friendly diagnostic tool that checks the implementation status of Google Consent Mode. Gold tier partners must also proactively notify customers about this tool and how to use it.

Requirements

Real-time Implementation Checker

  • Verify Cookient script is properly loaded

  • Confirm Consent Mode default commands fire before Google tags

  • Validate update commands fire after user consent choice

  • Check all four consent signals are being transmitted:

    • ad_storage

    • analytics_storage

    • ad_user_data

    • ad_personalization

  • Detect timing issues (default vs update command order)

Google Tag Detection

  • Detect presence of Google tags on the page:

    • Google Analytics 4 (GA4)

    • Google Ads conversion tracking

    • Google Tag Manager

    • gtag.js

  • Verify tags are respecting consent state

  • Identify tags firing before consent is established

Diagnostic Report

  • Clear pass/fail status for each check

  • Detailed error messages with actionable fix suggestions

  • Visual timeline of consent events

  • Export report as PDF or JSON

  • Shareable report link for support purposes

Browser Extension (recommended)

  • Chrome extension for real-time debugging

  • Visual overlay showing consent state on any page

  • Console panel with detailed event log

  • One-click health check

Dashboard Integration

  • Diagnostic section in Cookient admin dashboard

  • Enter URL to scan remotely

  • Automated periodic checks with email alerts

JavaScript Console Helper

  • Cookient.diagnose() method callable from browser console

  • Returns structured diagnostic object

  • Helpful for developers debugging integration

Validation Checks

  • Cookient script loaded and initialized

  • Default consent state set correctly (all denied by default)

  • Consent banner displayed to new visitors

  • Update command fires on user interaction

  • Consent state persisted correctly (cookie/localStorage)

  • Google tags detected and listed

  • Tags respecting consent state

  • No duplicate Consent Mode implementations

  • Correct region detection (EU/non-EU)

  • GTM integration working (if applicable)

Proactive Notifications

  • Email notification to new customers about the diagnostic tool

  • In-app tooltip/guide pointing to the tool

  • Warning alerts when issues are detected during periodic scans

Technical Notes

  • Use dataLayer inspection for GTM detection

  • Listen for consent command events on gtag

  • Consider using Puppeteer/Playwright for remote URL scanning

  • Cache scan results to avoid excessive requests

  • Rate limit remote scans to prevent abuse
